11 February, 2009 - 4:55pm Elwood Beach, Victoria, Australia

From where I'm sitting, about 40K's away, bushfires are still raging across southern Australia.

These are not grass fires, these are not little spot fires, but a freight train with a fire ball reaching 30 metre's into the air. The temperature, well over 1000C. If you get caught, as many, many did everything is incinerated.

I don't want to sound alarmist - but by today (11 February) there are close to 200 people dead with 100's still missing, over 5000 people who have nothing, I repeat nothing, with everything everything gone. Over quarter of a million hectares of land burnt to resemble a desert.

It started on the hottest day ever recorded in Victoria, Saturday 7th February 2009 (46.4C or 115.5F), with a ten year drought and everything dry, dry. Add what the Koori's call BOKARRA, a hot north westery wind that snakes and swarms, drys and menaces you with danger then changes direction hell bent on destruction. Once alight, this fireball is like a cyclone (hurricane) but you have nowhere to hide - fate is your only friend.
